Who’s On First?

In 1993, the U.S. Census released a list of the 76 most common street names in America, and it might surprise you to learn that the most popular name for a road is “Second Street.” A whopping 8,232 streets are named “Second” or “2nd.” If you’re old enough to remember the comedy duo of Abbott and Costello, then you’re likely familiar with their hilarious routine called “Who’s on First?” In much the same way, when it comes to streets, Second is first, first is third, and third is second. Why Second is more popular than First is puzzling. The most convincing explanation anyone has come up with so far is that in many towns the primary thoroughfare is “Main Street” instead of “First Street.” Since those two names split the honor, so to speak, they tumble in the rankings. Just in case you’re interested in the most popular street name in your state, here’s a U.S. map showing them all.
