Cheese is one of the world’s most popular foods, and also a victim of abduction. Over 4% of the total cheese made globally each year is stolen. In fact, cheese is at higher risk of being stolen than chocolate or alcohol. Studies show that other than shoplifters, employees are the biggest culprits. So, why is cheese stolen so often? Criminologists say it's because cheese is easy to conceal and it’s kept in refrigerators, which are subject to less surveillance than grocery shelves. Stolen cheese is a lucrative business because thieves can easily ship it out of the country and sell it to markets and restaurants elsewhere.
