The nautical term “knot” comes from when sailors in the 1600s measured ship speed by casting a weighted rope with knots tied an equal distance apart off the ship. The number of knots that passed in 30 seconds determined how fast the ship was traveling.
Nature Oddities
One in 5,000 north Atlantic lobsters are born bright blue. The coloration is caused by a genetic defect that causes the lobster to produce an excessive amount of a particular protein that gives the lobster the unique color.
