Ozempic For Cats?

Scientists suggest that a new version of blockbuster weight loss drugs may help combat obesity in cats. Pet biotech company Akston announced last week the start of a new clinical trial at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine that will test its version of GLP-1 injections for overweight cats. Obesity is one of the most common health issues plaguing household felines, with over 60% of cats in the U.S. being classified as overweight or obese. Much like in humans, obesity in cats sets them up for a cascade of long-term health issues, including diabetes and heart disease. Experts estimate these felines may live 5-10 years less than thinner cats, who typically live to be 13-17. The study is testing a once-weekly shot for 11 weeks. Normal weight for cats depends on the breed, but generally a healthy adult cat should weigh between 8 and 12 pounds. Larger breeds, like the Maine Coon, weigh between 15 and 25 pounds, while Siamese cats typically range 6-10 pounds. The study plans to use GLP-1 therapy, which reduces appetite, along with diet and exercise.
