Dave Comer was driving around Amherst, Virginia, in May 2025 when he spotted something in the road. He opened his truck door, look down, and there was a huge white thing on the ground. That white thing ended up being a wild turkey. Dave — who retired from the Navy in 2007 and now builds communication systems for aircraft carriers — didn’t know a thing about turkeys. He just knew he couldn’t leave this one lying on the road. He suspected that the turkey had fallen off a truck on its way to slaughter, so he decided to save the turkey’s life a second time by taking him home. When Dave arrived home, his wife Christina was shocked. “He opened the truck door, I looked down, and there’s this huge white thing,” explained Christina. The couple named the bird Chester and have been taking care of him ever since. Chester now spends his days watching TV, snacking on romaine and watermelon, waiting for the FedEx man, and following the Comers around like……..well…….a 50-pound chick. The couple estimates they’ve spent around $3,000 for Chester’s care to date. Their vet says the turkey may live as long as 10 years, especially if he slims down a bit — not an easy task for a butterball breed. “The rest of his life, he’ll live comfortably with us,” said Dave. “He certainly deserves it. You’re a good boy!"
