Japan’s “Crying Hotel” is Cheaper Than a Therapist

If you’ve been bottling up your feelings like a ticking time bomb about to explode into tears, there may be a safe place for you to do that. Mitsui Garden Yotsuya Hotel in Tokyo has sectioned off eight rooms of its hotel as designated “crying rooms,” available only to female clientele for a mere $83 a night. With more women entering the workforce than ever before, there’s been a significant rise in female stress and anxiety. The hotel says it wants to provide women with a luxurious space to de-stress through crying. The hotel’s compassion doesn’t end there. If you find yourself with inexplicably dry eyes upon check-in, the rooms come supplied with a number of tear-jerking aids, including sad movies, warm sheets, eye masks, tissues, and the best toiletry of all — makeup remover. Yohei Ezato, the PR representative for the hotel says they have no plans to open the sob section of the hotel to male clientele. Of course, if you’re especially frugal, you can take the subway and cry it out — though no one there will try to comfort you.
