When it comes to mountain rescues, the St. Bernard may have met its match. Now a Chihuahua is being hailed as a hero for helping to save a man who had fallen into a crevasse on the Fee Glacier in the southern Swiss Alps. The man had been hiking on the glacier with his Chihuahua early last week, when he suddenly plunged into a 26-foot-deep crevasse, leaving the tiny dog alone on the edge. Although the man was carrying an amateur walkie-talkie that allowed him to call for help, rescue workers struggled to locate the site of the accident. Then one of the rescuers spotted movement on a rock. The tiny Chihuahua had not budged from the edge of the crevasse. Thanks to the pup’s behavior, the crew was able to locate the exact site of the accident. Rescuers then rappelled down to the victim and were able to save him. Rescuers say if the dog had not been there, it’s unlikely they would have found the missing man.
