At MIT, It’s Sink or Graduate

If you plan on getting a Bachelor’s Degree from MIT, you’d better be prepared to swim. That’s because a swim test is required in order to graduate. The swim test consists of jumping into the pool feet first and swimming 100 yards continuously. There is also the option to take a beginner swim course to fulfill the swim requirement. Many schools require the completion of a physical education course to graduate, but in MIT’s case, it can be done with a simple swim test. While there’s never been a specific reason given for the requirement, rumor has it that the school is concerned that students may fall into the Charles River and drown. Whatever the reason, you’ll have to master your water wings if you plan on walking away with a diploma in your hand.
