A Cat Named Leonardo da Pinchy Wants to Steal Your Underwear

Most cat owners dread their pets bringing home “gifts” — which usually turn out to be mice or birds — but for Helen North of Wellington, New Zealand, that means getting other people’s underwear. Going by the name Leonardo da Pinchy, her cat has a prolific reputation for pinching laundry from clotheslines in the placid beachside neighborhood of Mairangi Bay. The 15-month-old feline has expensive taste, too. His frequent hauls include silk boxer shorts, thick men’s work socks — preferably with clothespins still attached — and in one mortifying trip even snatched a brand new $180 cashmere sweater. “My daughter was at home sick and she rang me at work saying, ’It’s bad, it’s bad, this is the worst thing he’s brought in, it’s really bad',” said North. That's when North decided to turn to a neighborhood WhatsApp group to return Leo’s stolen goods to their rightful owners. Her usual message: “Are these your undies?” Unfortunately, the pilfered stash kept piling up. On one record-setting day, Leo returned with 9 items, enough for a full outfit if you didn’t mind a mix of everything from baby clothes to menswear. With dozens of items unclaimed, the embarrassed owner took her search for Leo’s victims wider, posting photos of his hauls on a local Facebook page, along with an apology and her address. Before long, people began showing up to claim their clothing. One of North’s neighbors, who is allergic to cats, now dries her laundry indoors. Leo’s life of crime began when he was a kitten, so North is hoping that it’s a phase he will grow out of. “I don’t want to do this for like 15 years,” said North. For now, on the streets of Mairangi Bay, Leonardo da Pinchy remains at large.
