When Eddy Goldfarb was 12 years old, his father died, leaving his mother, Eddy and his brother to support the family. Eddy worked delivering newspapers and groceries and landed a job as a soda jerk at the local drug store. When he was old enough, he enlisted in the Navy, becoming a radar technician on a submarine. While at sea, he invented a specialized radar antenna. His sketchbook was filled with drawings of his inventions, but soon he decided that if he wanted to be a real inventor, he needed to specialize in one industry. He chose toys. After the war, Eddy returned to Chicago, where he met his wife Anita. She agreed to support him for two years while he pursued his dream of becoming an independent inventor. The first item Eddy sold was the Yakity Yak Talking Teeth, a simple gag item that became a cultural icon. He went on to invent Busy Biddy Chicken — and orange egg-laying chicken with a wobbling head — and Merry-Go-Sip — a children’s drinking cup featuring a carousel lid that spun around when a child drank through the attached straw. Eddy went on to invent over 800 toys, and in 2003 was inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame. Now, at 104, he continues to invent toys, this time with the assistance of technology. As for the secret to longevity, Eddy believes it's the result of being creative and staying optimistic.
