The Little Car You Can Drive in France Without a License

Losing your driver’s license in the U.S. is a serious matter, but in France it’s “no license, no problem.” That’s because you can simply go shopping for a VSP, a small 2-seater car that anyone 14 or older can take out on the road. You’ll probably hear the car coming first — it has a high-pitched whine like a sewing machine being run at full throttle. If you get stuck behind one on a winding rural road, you won’t be breaking any speed limits. That’s because the top speed of the VSP is 28mph. Although the literal translation of the VSP — voiture sans permis — is “car without license,” it is, in fact, the driver who doesn’t need a license. It’s impossible to survive in rural parts of France without a car, which is why you'll see the elderly tooling around in their VSPs, stopping at rural markets. At a cool €14,000 ($13,366) you can pick up a VSP, complete with air conditioning, a reverse camera, and a top-flight sound system. They’re cheap to run, turn on a dime, and are simple to park.
