When Dr. Joan Dimopoulos was having lunch in the cafeteria of Loyola University Medical Center, a piece of her chicken sandwich became lodged in her throat. That’s when Keztly Angel, a cashier in the cafeteria jumped into action. She quickly performed the Heimlich maneuver, saving the doctor’s life. Angel said she had learned the life-saving technique as a student at Proviso East High School in Maywood, IL. She said it was her first time using the technique. Dr. Dimopoulos said Angel’s knowledge of what to do and then having the courage to actually do it for someone she didn’t know saved her life. “There were a lot of people around, but she’s the one who jumped up and helped me right away,” said Dr. Dimopoulous. Angel’s heroic moment was rewarded, when the doctor presented her with flowers as a token of her appreciation during a special ceremony to recognize Angel. To make the day even more special, Angel was celebrating her first anniversary as an employee of the medical center.
