The Strange Instrument Dolly Parton Used to Record “9 to 5”

Dolly Parton has many beauty signatures, including sky-high blonde hair, indigo blue eyes, and ruby red lips. It’s her signature acrylic nails, however, that wield the most power. That’s because they played an integral part in the infectious baseline of her hit song “9 to 5” recorded back in 1980. Parton revealed that she used her acrylic nails when she was writing the song because they make the noise that sounds like a typewriter. What’s more, her extreme nails even have an official credit on the record. It actually says “Nails by Dolly” on the album. Parton says that “9 to 5” wasn’t the first song on which she used her nails. “My nails are my rhythm section when I’m writing a song all alone,” Parton confessed.
