Woman Adds Up What Could Be Done With Billionaires’ Money

Forbes recently reported that despite the pandemic, 2020 was a record-setting year for the world’s wealthiest, with a $5 trillion surge in wealth and an unprecedented number of new billionaires. Altogether, 2,755 billionaires are worth $13.1 trillion. That saddened Twitter user Jane Chung, who pointed out that poverty rates are on the rise for the first time in 20 years. Taking a look at what could be done with their money, Chung determined that for every dollar the billionaires earn, they get 56¢ richer by just sitting on it for a year. The things the billionaires could change include ending global hunger, eradicating malaria, ending homelessness in America, and ending the famine in Yemen. Chung estimates the billionaires would still have enough to split, with each taking home around $20 billion. If they wanted to — and it’s likely they don’t — these billionaires could send a check for $2,638 to every family in America. Jeff Bezos could still walk away with $113 billion and Mark Zuckerberg could take home $54.7 billion. Chung says the moral of the story is, don’t ever let your government tell you it doesn’t have enough money to feed and house their people.
