How a 17-Year-Old Mastered the Art of Bartering On Craigslist

Starting with an old cell phone a friend gave him, 17-year-old Steven Ortiz of Glendora, Calif., used Craigslist to trade up 14 times over two years and eventually ended up with a Porsche Boxter. The high schooler used the “barter” section of Craigslist to trade the free cell phone for an iPod Touch, the iPod Touch for a dirt bike, the dirt bike for a MacBook Pro, and that’s when the vehicles began. He traded the MacBook Pro for a Toyota 4Runner, which was then bartered for a custom off-road golf cart. At the time, Steven was only 15, so the golf cart was the only vehicle he could legally drive. Fast-forward two years and several barters and he finally traded a 1975 Ford Bronco for a 2000 Porsche Boxster S. Still not satisfied, Steven is considering his next trade — perhaps for a Cadillac Escalade.
