A Unique Way For Workers To Strike

In 2018, bus drivers in Okayama, Japan, took to the streets in an unusual form of protest. While technically on strike, they continued to drive their routes, but refused to require riders to pay a fare. The drivers were striking to secure improvements to job security after a competitor came on the scene. Management would normally use the work stoppage against the drivers, appealing to the public that drivers are putting their needs before the community's. However, drivers of this strike thwarted that plan by continuing to clock in, but without performing the part of their job that requires them to accept payment. In other words, free bus rides for all. The bus drivers’ plan worked and the public sympathized with them, putting pressure on the bus company to ensure that drivers would have job security going forward.
