Obese Seagulls in Bahrain Have Triggered Calls for a Clean-Up

Machboos is the national dish of Bahrain. It’s name is derived from the Arabic word for "compressed" — kabs. The traditional Arabic dish is rice cooked in a chicken broth and flavored with spices and dried lemon. Unfortunately, leftovers have led the seagull population to shun the traditional ocean feeding grounds in favor of plentiful supplies of the oil-drenched rice that’s thrown out with the garbage. As a result, seagulls are becoming too fat to fly. Abdullah Al Qubaisi, chairman of the Northern Municipal Council’s technical committee, called for a clean-up, because fat seagulls staggering around the streets are bringing down the reputation of respectable neighborhoods.
