Chinese Husband Is Ordered To Pay His Ex-Wife $8,000 For Housework She Did During Their 5-Year Marriage

A Chinese woman known as Wang told the court when seeking extra compensation in her divorce from her husband that during their five years of marriage, she looked after their child, performed household chores, and cooked, while the only thing her husband did was go to work. The court ruled that Wang had indeed taken on more household responsibilities and should receive $8,000, sole custody of their child, and $300 a month in support. The amount reflected the length of time the couple were married, the effort Wang put into housework, her husband’s income, and the local cost of living. Under the country’s new civil code, divorcees have the right to request compensation if they bore more responsibilities at home.
