“Thundersnow” Reported In Edinburgh Was So Loud That Police Were Called About Explosions

If you’re not familiar with “thundersnow,” it’s when thunder and lightning mix with a heavy snowstorm, often causing loud claps and easily confused with explosions. A rare thundersnow event took place in Edinburgh, Scotland, recently, with alarmed locals calling police after thinking they heard explosions. One person said it sounded like a sonic boom, while another said they were awakened by thunderclaps in the middle of the night. Some even thought a construction project had begun early. It was the coldest night of winter so far, with the temperature dropping to 13º F. Police immediately took to social media to reassure residents that they weren’t in any danger.
