Man In a Wheelchair Gets the Ride of His Life

In 2007, Ben Carpenter got the ride of a lifetime when his electric wheelchair became lodged in the grille of a tractor-trailer and was accidentally pushed down a highway for several miles going approximately 50 mph. The incident happened when Ben began to cross at an intersection where the truck was stopped at a red light. The light turned green while Ben was still in front of the truck, but the driver couldn’t see him. The truck bumped into the side of the wheelchair, which then started turning forward with its handles lodged in the grille. With Ben strapped in the chair, he was held captive as the truck sped down the highway. Ben and the chair were pushed down the highway for about four miles before motorists called 911 and police were able to get the truck driver’s attention and have him pull over. Amazingly, Ben walked away without a scratch. The chair, however, didn’t fare as well. The truck burned most of the rubber off its tires, but once new ones were installed, the wheelchair was as good as new and Ben was no worse for the scare.
