The U.S. Has Millennials — Taiwan Has Strawberries

Taiwan's millennials are known as the "strawberry generation," and it's not a compliment. While the millennials believe they're helping to turn Taipei into something hipper — a place that embraces creativity and innovation — the older generation of Taiwanese see the youngsters as soft and easily bruised. Hence, the “strawberry generation,” a disparaging way of saying they don’t work hard like their parents did. While typical Asian mega-cities race to build gleaming towers and lookalike shopping centers, Taipei's millennial entrepreneurs are focused on unique spaces: Tiny tea houses on leafy streets, shops selling hand-stitched notebooks, and old industrial sites turned into art parks. Whether the strawberry generation will contribute significantly to Taiwanese society remains to be seen.
