Professional People Walkers Really Exist

Anybody who has ever watched the sitcom The King of Queens knows that Carrie’s father Arthur is walked by professional dog walker Holly Shumpert. While that might sound like something created just for television comedy, professional people walkers actually exist in real life. The People Walker is a service in Los Angeles that allows you to hire someone to walk with you and provide motivation through conversation and companionship. The service was launched in 2016 by actor Chuck McCarthy when he was in between acting jobs and needed money. He initially advertised the business by posting fliers asking questions like “Need motivation to walk?”, “Scared to walk alone at night?”, "Don’t want people to see you walking alone and just assume you have no friends?”, which led to people contacting him to schedule walks. After receiving a large number of requests, McCarthy hired more walkers and began offering more locations. The website lists the profiles of the available walkers for hire, which includes a video of the walker introducing themselves. The walkers, who are contractors, all set their own rates. McCarthy charges $7 for 30 minutes.
