Bot Orders $18,752 Of McSundaes Every 30 Minutes To Find Out If the Machines Are Working

Burgers, fries and McNuggets are the staples of McDonald’s fare, but the chain also offers soft-serve ice cream in most of its 38,000+ locations — at least theoretically. In reality, the ice cream machines are famous for breaking down, routinely disappointing anyone trying to satisfy their McFlurry craving. Rashiq Zahid — an enterprising software engineer — decided it’s better to “know before you go,” so he conducted an experiment. He developed a bot he named McBroken to check ahead. The bot maps out all the McDonald’s near you with a simple color-coded dot system: green if the machine is working, red if it’s not. McBroken works through the McDonald’s app that’s used to place an order in advance. He's currently placing an order worth $18,752 every minute at McDonald’s in the U.S. to figure out which locations have a broken ice cream machine. So far, just 10% of McDonald’s machines are broken nationwide. For its part, McDonald's doesn't seem particularly upset about Zahid's project, tweeting: "Only a true McDonald's fan would go to these lengths to help customers get our delicious ice cream, so thanks! We know we have some opportunities to consistently satisfy even more customers with sweet treats, and we will."
