Hay-on-Wye: The Adorably Cute Book Town

Hay-on-Wye is a small town on the Welsh-English border. It’s fame comes from the fact that it’s the used book capital of the world. Not only are there more bookstores than you could ever imagine, there are even bookshelves on the streets. The town is filled with all things book related, as well as a variety of quaint eateries where you can enjoy British grub while you page through your literary finds. The bookish town began in 1961, when Richard Booth opened the town’s first second-hand bookshop in an old firehouse. Soon, many other people in town began opening their own bookshops, with many specializing in a specific niche. Now, there are bookshops dedicated to rare, vintage, children’s, and historical books, to name a few. In fact, Hay-on-Wye now has over 20 bookstores, all dedicated to the love of the written word.
