The Largest Plane Ever Built Was Only Built Once

The plane used by the Wright Brothers to perform the first powered plane flight in 1903 would fit entirely into the cargo hold of the Antonov AN-225 Mriya — the world’s biggest fully-operational plane. Powered by six turbofan engines, and with a wingspan of almost the length of a football field, the gentle giant of the skies can carry bigger and heavier cargo than any other plane in the world. What makes it unique in the world of aviation is the fact that only one was built. A favorite of aircraft fans around the world, the AN-225 attracts a crowd whenever it visits an airport during one of its rare heavy lifting jobs. In April 2020, the AN-225 set yet another record by transporting 100 tons of COVID-19 protective equipment, medicines and tests from Tianjin, China, to Warsaw, Poland.
