Italy Hails “Trading Places” As the Ultimate Christmas Eve Movie

Trading Places is a 1983 comedy classic, but you wouldn’t think of it as a holiday movie. Technically, the movie takes place during all three holidays — Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. In one scene, Billy Ray — played by Eddie Murphy — says, “It ain’t cool being no jive turkey this close to Thanksgiving!” Louis Winthorpe III — played by Dan Aykroyd — is seen dressed in a Santa suit and eating a smoked salmon, and the whole gang winds up together on a train from Philadelphia to New York on New Year’s Eve. Almost 40 years after its release, the movie has become a Christmas Eve classic in Italy, being broadcast by Italian television every year since December 24, 1986.
