The Mayor Who Drowned In a Sewer

In 1980, Monica Myers, mayor of tiny Betterton, Maryland, fell into a sewage tank in her town’s biggest municipal facility and drowned. Deputy Buster Blackiston surmised that the mayor was up on the catwalks over the top of the tank when she slipped and fell into human waste. “It’s just like putty,” he said. “She didn’t have a chance to get out. It’s like quicksand.” Town engineer Karl Gustafson found the body of the 70-year-old woman when he arrived at the Betterton Treatment Plant. He said the mayor often brushed the tanks and took tests for chlorine and sediment, and her testing equipment was inside when he arrived. Gustafson said he found her body floating face-down in the 15-foot deep aeration tank four feet below.
