Is Google Safe?

Any time you use Google, you’re using a service that has access to your personal information over the Internet. Never kid yourself; when you use Google’s free services, they always collect data on you. In fact, the list of what’s collected is staggering. There’s the information you voluntarily provide, like your name, email address, telephone number, and personal profile picture. Then there’s the data that’s gathered when you use a Google service. Google can see which YouTube videos you watch and websites you visit. They track what device you’re using, your IP address, and location information using GPS. We don’t think much of it when we give our information away a little at a time, but viewed as a whole it gives a pretty accurate picture of us and what we do online. For many, they accept that as the price of using free services. If the service is free, you’re not the customer — you’re the product, and the product is your personal information. As your mother probably told you at some point in your life, nothing is ever truly free.
