In Japan the Way To a High School Girl’s Heart Is Through a Jacket Button

There’s a tradition in Japan that goes like this: the person a high school boy gives the second button of his uniform to is the person he’s sweet on. The tradition began in 1960 with a scene from the movie “Konpeki no Sora Tooku” (Goodbye to Glory). The main character, who enlisted into a kamikaze unit during the war, grieves as he realizes he might not return home alive. Wanting to give a final gift to a girl he likes, he chooses to give her the second button on his military uniform. As for why he chose the second button and not the first is because the first button represents oneself, while the second represents one’s most beloved. So what happens after their crush accepts the button? Sadly, only 3% of couples go on to get married.
