The Curious Case of the Man Who Can’t See Numbers 2 Through 9

Scientists at Johns Hopkins University recently reported the strange case of a man whose rare degenerative brain disease has left him unable to distinguish certain numbers. After studying the man — who is an engineering geologist — scientists diagnosed him with the rare degenerative brain disease corticobasal syndrome. The subject of their research had suffered neurological damage to such an extent that he could neither distinguish nor reproduce numbers between 2 and 9 — not even pictures or words with those digits embedded in them. Instead, those numbers would be a blur. Yet, the man's EEG results showed that his brain was fully capable of properly identifying all pictures and words, even ones with the digits 2 through 9 in them. For now, more research is being conducted to further understand the condition.
